ABSTRACT

This chapter examines special features of the processes of structure formation and formation of mechanical properties in ion implantation on the surface of metallic titanium- a promising material for application in practice. The formation of nanoparticles of intermetallic phase in the structure of a titanium-based alloy in the ion implantation conditions should result in considerable hardening of this material determined by both the dispersion hardening and the formation of internal stress fields. The chapter analyses the results of investigation of the evolution of the structural-phase state, the grain structure and the parameters of the dislocation substructure of titanium after the effect of aluminium ions in dependence on the structural state of the target. The typical characteristics of the quantitative parameters of the mechanical properties of the metallic materials are in particular the yield strength and strain hardening.
