ABSTRACT

Technological advances have established the fundamental role of medical imaging in the management of the seriously ill patient in the major trauma setting. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is widely accepted as the modality of choice for assessing major trauma patients because of its capability to produce high quality images fast. Trauma to the spinal column may result in temporary or permanent disability evident at the time of injury or with delayed onset often because of mechanical instability. MDCT provides excellent depiction of biomechanical bone injuries. The pelvis is a common site of injury following polytrauma. Fractures to the pelvic ring with associated vascular and/or soft tissue injuries require a rapid assessment because of their impact on patient morbidity and mortality. Plain radiography may be used to assess extremities for the nature and extent of any injuries. MDCT has a role in assessing complex fractures, subluxations and vascular injuries.
