ABSTRACT

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been gaining a lot of popularity in the recent past. WSNs have found varied applications (APPs) ranging from tracking the migration of animals, monitoring wildfires, and homeland and defense APP involving surveillance and reconnaissance. A WSN may be an ad hoc wireless network (NWK) or mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The typical characteristics of sensor nodes in a WSN are:[1-20]

∙ Each node performs the sensing operation; ∙ Each node may/may not perform computation on the

local sensor data; ∙ Each node wirelessly transmits the (un)processed/

computed sensor data to other nodes typically in order to cooperatively combine and fuse the data for various functional goals;

∙ Each sensor node is typically small and battery operated and contains low-power system on chip (SoC) that may include microprocessors, microsensors, and wireless communication interfaces;

∙ Each node may or may not be mobile.
