ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some suggestions about what it takes to become an excellent clinical teacher and leader. One will be so busy with his/her clinical work during the Foundation years that other aspects of the doctors' roles, such as management and teaching, will probably take a back seat. However, all doctors become teachers as medical students and juniors pass through hospitals, clinics and community practices. Some of the best learning experiences will have been gained by time spent with patients, listening to their stories and discussing their treatment regimes. Leaders have a clear sense of their values and beliefs, have the social skills to attract and maintain relationships with others in a way that motivates action on those values and beliefs, and maintain a transparency, integrity and genuineness that foster the trust of those who choose to follow.
