ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Spatial Modulation (SM) systems in detail and about its spectral efficiency, diversity order and detection complexity. It also discusses performance of SM systems over various generalized fading channels. SM systems have been widely studied by several researchers across the globe. Especially with the advancement of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and the proposal of large MIMO systems, SM has been viewed as one of the promising technologies for implementing large MIMO systems with reduced hardware and computational complexity. The chapter also discusses various performance parameters of SM MIMO systems over fading channels. It analyzes various performance metrics over generalized fading channels. Channel capacity is another metric that can help to determine the quality of a wireless communication link. The information of transmit antenna index is carried along with the transmitted symbol without demanding extra channel capacity. Symbol error rate gives the fraction of information received in error.
