ABSTRACT
At a cocktail party at my university there was a spirited conversation about whether academics are more eccentric and depressive than other highly motivated professionals. At some point, a psychologist who had studied the matter extensively joined the conversation and declared that, no, academics were definitely not more eccentric and depressive than other professionals. The only exceptions, he noted, were mathematicians and oboe players.
