ABSTRACT

A focus on operational discipline (OD) can help ensure that human error is minimized and system requirements are rigorously followed, preventing serious injuries and incidents and improving overall safety and business performance. OD is used to describe human behavior in following required systems, procedures, and practices to achieve high quality, reliable, and safe processes. An effective OD program emphasizes completing all tasks correctly and safely every time, regardless of the role of individuals in the organization-OD is for everyone, not just for operators. Leadership should develop specific goals about improving OD each year, based on evaluation of site-specific issues. This chapter discusses the leadership processes for improving OD. Leading improvement of OD is a continuous process, where improvement opportunities must be identified and worked on, improvement must be sustained, and then new opportunities must be identified for continued improvement.
