ABSTRACT

Safe animal feed is important for the animal’s health, the environment, and the safety of foods from animal origin. There are many examples of the close link between the safety of animal feed and human foods; a known example succeeded with the inclusion of mammalian and bone meal in farm animals feed, the consequent spread of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, and the association of its infected meat with the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) in humans (https://www.efsa.europa.eu/ en/topics/topic/feed.htm).
