ABSTRACT

Data acquired as part of patient examinations plus the context in which the data sit produces information. It is this information that informatics exploits in various manners. Information governance (IG) is an umbrella of guidelines and principles to help practitioners gather, use, and look after information. It has the following four key areas relating to patient data: making sure it is complete and current, available when required, access safeguarded, and using informatics tools with the information to benefit patient care. In the context of healthcare informatics, there are four types of information we need to be aware of: confidential, personal, sensitive, and anonymous. In the context of informatics, the proposed updates have the effect of strengthening the requirements on stringent data recording within the imaging speciality. Additional legislation should be considered beyond these when managing an imaging informatics service. The two main aspects relating to informatics are safety and system integrity.
