ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 deals with strings and cables which are similar in that they only support tensile loads which results in simplified equations of motion. Discussions begin with the development of the linear equations of motion for the transverse vibration of strings in which both initial and boundary conditions are discussed. The general solution of the wave equation is developed with discussions of the traveling wave and Fourier transformation solutions presented. This is followed by discussions of the free vibration of finite length strings with a brief discussion of discontinuous strings. The forced vibrations of finite length strings are then established. This is followed by discussions of the equations of motion for bars. The free longitudinal vibration of bars is presented along with discussions of the orthogonality of natural modes. Free vibrations with given initial conditions are also investigated. The forced vibration of bars is then considered with discussion of the effect of damping and a presentation of the natural mode expansion method as well as considerations of concentrated forces.
