Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is reviewed in this chapter. Some background is given on the tissue engineering process and the medical applications of this technology. Providing the proper cellular environment for tissue engineering is discussed with attention given to the extracellular matrix and the molecules that mediate cellular interactions. The biomaterials used in tissue engineering are described along with fabrication techniques such as 3D printing and bioprinting. Biocompatibility of the tissue engineered constructs is also discussed. In vitro culture of these tissue engineered constructs in bioreactors is also given.
