ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a review of thermodynamic concepts such as the first and second law. This is followed by an extensive discussion on solution thermodynamics, the properties of liquids and gases, and phase equilibrium. These principles are then applied to a variety of problems where equilibrium thermodynamics can be used to obtain an understanding of a variety of important phenomena of interest to bioengineers.
