ABSTRACT

Job safety analysis (JSA) is a systematic review and assessment of hazards to which employees are exposed when performing work activities. JSA is done prior to the execution of the work activity - for example, as part of the application of a permit-to-work. This chapter presents generic steps and principles for JSA and gives an example of a JSA sheet. When performing a JSA of an activity before start up, the analysis normally is performed in a meeting with involved workers. In the planning and preparation phase, the group of workers performing the JSA is decided and a meeting plan and milestones are established. Background information is collected (i.e. experience database and experience carriers) such as relevant information from the accident database, relevant accident investigation reports, and from similar JSAs performed previously. A JSA is applied in the analysis of individual work activities. It is also applicable in a systematic and detailed mapping of a department's hazards.
