ABSTRACT

Control algorithms of active and semi-active systems require information about the state and parameters of structures. The state is described by their displacements, velocities and accelerations at the DoFs and the parameters are defined by dynamic properties, such as their natural frequencies, damping and mode shapes of structures. For the identification of the state and parameters of systems, numerous system identification methods have been proposed. However, particularly for semi-active vibration control systems, a real-time operation capability of the used identification method is decisive. Based on the Kalman filter and its improved version, the unscented Kalman filter, this chapter introduces an adaptive observer for the joint identification of the state and parameters of MDoF structures. The observer is particularly suitable for semi-active systems. The chapter presents the derivation of the governing equations and conducts numeric parametric studies for the investigation of the performance of the observer.
