ABSTRACT

Image denoising is one of the fundamental challenges in image processing and computer vision, where the underlying goal is to estimate the original image by suppressing noise from a noisy image. An image may become noisy due to various intrinsic (i.e. sensor) and extrinsic (i.e. environment) conditions. Image denoising is an important step in various image processing activities where the performance depends on the original noise-free image contents. Image denoising techniques can be implemented in spatial domain as well as frequency domain. In this chapter, various types of image-corrupting noise and the sources and mathematical models for these types of noise are discussed. Various denoising techniques in spatial and frequency domain are also provided. Performance evaluation parameters of denoising techniques are also given in this chapter.
