ABSTRACT

Family Threskiomithidae contains twenty eight species, with representatives in the warmer areas of all the world's zoogeographical regions. Ten occur in the Afrotropical Region. Of the six found in Kenya, the Eurasian Spoonbill is a rare vagrant from the Palearctic. Sacred ibis spreads south (S) of 17°N, apart from the arid SW. In Kenya the wide distribution of this common ibis reflects wandering to feed on moist ground near or far from all types of water, including small temporary pools. Hadada spread S of 15°N, with the exceptions of the drier areas of east (E) Somalia and the SW of the continent north (N) to N Angola. In Kenya it is locally common where mainly permanent waters are near open forest or woodland, including coastal shores and mangroves. The Hadada's breeding squares are 90% above 1000 m, and completely absent from the seemingly suitable coastal lowlands.
