ABSTRACT

Family Pandionidae is a monotypic family: ospreys occur in all of the world's zoogeographical regions. In Afrotropical Region Osprey is widely distributed south (S) of 17°N, apart from the arid SW. There are a few unconfirmed breeding records S to the Cape, but the Osprey is mainly a non-breeding migrant from the Palearctic. Its only regular breeding area in the Afrotropical Region is along the Red Sea coasts. In Kenyan Region Osprey is a reasonably common Palearctic passage migrant and winter visitor Sept-Apr that is found by fish-bearing and mainly large waters, usually singly. These waters are mainly eutrophic and carbonate lakes, while it occurs in sheltered creeks and estuaries along the coast, and shows little correlation with permanent rivers. Single birds are recorded oversummering May-Aug almost annually, and several reported breeding records at Naivasha have involved birds using old Fish Eagle nests as feeding platforms.
