ABSTRACT

The Crowned Crane is a common breeding resident in Kenya, while there is also an unsatisfactory old record of the Palearctic Crane Grus grus. 14 species which, while mainly Holarctic (Sn), have representatives in all zoogeographical regions except the Neotropical. Widely distributed South (S) of 16°N but absent from the dry southwest and from the equatorial forest areas of the W. Distribution in Kenya represents the E limit of the range. Two races occur. Most records are referrable to B.p. gibbericeps which is common in highland marshes and grasslands, up to 3000 m. Burke counted over 800 in 757 mile2 of the Kisii district 60D that had a human population of 650/mile2. The S edge of the Ethiopian and Sudanese population of the race B.p. ceciliae is represented by records at low altitudes around N L Turkana, where it is frequent to common (HH), and at 16D.
