ABSTRACT

Two species, represented in all zoogeographical regions except the Nearctic. One occurs in the Afrotropical Region, and breeds in Kenya. Painted Snipes are found around all types of waters, including coastal lagoons (Br), but are absent from L Turkana. 78% of the squares receive over 500 mm annual rainfall. The very few breeding records doubtless reflect the obscurity of the nests, but this species is also migratory, at least locally, with various seasonalities known. A skulking, close-sitting, rather uncommon species that requires exposed moist mud for feeding, and adjacent thick cover into which to retire. It is awarded D2C2 because it is not difficult to detect and, once seen, is unmistakeable. Widely distributed S of 15°N, apart from arid E Somalia, and most of the equatorial forest areas of the W.
