ABSTRACT

The breeding of under 50 pairs on islands N of Kiunga village 80CD Jul-Sept represents the S extremity of its breeding range, and this gull is a markedly seasonal nonbreeding visitor further S. The Gull-billed Tern is a reasonably common winter visitor Aug-Apr (Br). Inland, it is common in flocks of 30–40, particularly on the rift valley lakes, where roosts of up to 800 occur at Lake Nakuru 62A. A pelagic tern that breeds on islands along the tropical E African coast and in the Indian Ocean. In the W it breeds in the Gulf of Guinea, and extends to mainly S tropical coasts. P. L. Britton & C. H. Brown noted the similar wintering distributions of this species and the Lesser Black-backed Gull within Africa, and this comparison extends to their Kenyan ranges.
