ABSTRACT

The Bar-tailed Trogon is usually segregated from Narina's by greater altitude, but both occur around 1700 m in Kakamega Forest 48D and at 2000 m in the Nguruman Hills 74D. In contrast to Narina's Trogon, this rather uncommon bird is confined to highland forest. Range is 91% moist subhumid-humid, and entirely above 1500 m. The inland race shows a marked tendency for movements, and an individual attracted to a light at 2800 m in the Aberdare Mts 62BD suggests these to be at least partly nocturnal. The race A.n. littoralis inhabits the coastal lowlands, where numbers fluctuate seasonally and there are no breeding records: it may be a non-breeding visitor, but its breeding could equally well be overlooked. There is a similar lack of breeding records in adjacent S Somalia, where it is only presumed resident.
