ABSTRACT

A nearly cosmopolitan family of approximately 200 species, with greatest diversity in the Neotropical and Oriental Regions (Sn). The Afrotropical Region has only 27 species (14%), and 14 of these (52%) occur in Kenya. Of the Kenyan species, 13 (93%) breed or are thought to do so, while the Eurasian Wryneck (511) is a non-breeding migrant from the Palearctic. The latter species is the only one known to undertake migratory movements (Br)(but see Grey Woodpecker (522)), and all are closely associated with trees or substantial bush.
