ABSTRACT

An almost cosmopolitan family of aerial insectivores containing 74 species. Of the 35 (47%) recorded in the Afrotropical Region, 28 (80%) are endemic (HM). 18 species (51% of the Afrotropical total) have occurred in Kenya, where 13 (72%) breed, three (17%) are non-breeding migrants from the Palearctic, one is a vagrant from Madagascar, and one a scarce intra-African migrant on the E edge of its non-breeding range. The potential Afrotropical breeding ranges of many species have been immensely increased by their nesting on man-made structures (HM). BANDED MARTIN Riparia cincta
