ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the birds comes under the family Malaconotidae: Bush Shrikes, Puffbacks, Boubous, Gonoleks, Tchagras, Brubru , Black-backed puffback, Northern puffback, Pringle's puffback, Brown-headed tchagra, Three-streaked tchagra, Black-headed tchagra, Marsh tchagra, Rosy-patched shrike, Black-headed gonolek, Luhder's bush shrike, Red-naped bush shrike, Tropical boubou, Slate-coloured boubou, Sulphur-breasted bush shrike, Many-coloured bush shrike, and others. The Papyrus Gonolek is separated from congeners by its habitat, while the Red-naped Bush Shrike occupies dry bush country to the E of the rift valley. The forest habitat of Lühderk Bush Shrike segregates it from these two species and the Black-headed Gonolek. The final species, the Tropical Boubou, is found in a wide variety of well vegetated habitats, such that its complete segregation from Liihder's Bush Shrike and the Black-headed Gonolek appears dubious. The Sulphur-breasted Bush Shrike forms part of a superspecies with the Many-coloured Bush Shrike (HM), which is ecologically segregated in forest interiors (Br).
