ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the birds comes under the family Laniidae: Shrikes, Fiscals, Red-backed shrike, Red-tailed shrike, Woodchat shrike , Grey-backed fiscal, Long-tailed fiscal, Lesser grey shrike, Fiscal, Taita fiscal, Somali fiscal, Mackinnon's shrike and Yellow-billed shrike. Some 26 species, which are predominantly Afrotropical, Palearctic and Oriental. 15 occur in the Afrotropical Region and, of these, 13 have been recorded in Kenya. Although some wandering may occur, no Afrotropical shrikes are certainly known to undertake migratory movements (Br; HM), and all eight of Kenya's African species either breed or are thought to do so. The remaining five shrikes recorded in Kenya are all Palearctic migrants. In contrast to most of the Bush Shrikes, most members of this family are prominently perching, conspicuous and often noisy and aggressive birds, with higher D ratings.
