ABSTRACT
La Mettrie, Julian Offray de (1709–1751) Controversial French physician who proposed the materialistic philosophy that the ultimate goal of life is enjoyment of pleasure, soul perished with the body, and virtue was enlightened by self-interest. His book, L’Histoire naturelle de Vame (1745) was publicly burnt and he had to take refuge in Berlin under the protection of Frederick the II of Prussia.
