ABSTRACT

Experiments are performed and observations are generated in almost every discipline. Engineers perform experiments to improve the quality of products. A designed experiment is an experiment in which the experimenter plans the structure of the experiment. There are many different types of designs for experiments. Designs are classified by their characteristics. Among the ones used to classify designs are: the number of factors, the types of factors, type of randomization used, replication structure, and any relationships between the factors. In some experiments, one or more variables are held constant throughout the experiment. Finally, this chapter presents an overview of this book. The book introduces the linear model, and presents the properties of linear models. It focuses on the types of linear models used in problems involving numerical independent variables called regression models.
