ABSTRACT

A safe workplace is an efficient workplace and vice versa. There exists a high degree of correlation between safety and productivity; the combination of low accident rates and high production rates does exist in this country's most successful businesses. While it is recognized that some companies only look at direct costs, their greater losses are the indirect costs. Many other losses will be incurred when an injured worker with a bandaged hand will not be able to handle machinery or material in the same way as before the accident. One should consider conducting a pilot study where cost figures are assigned to each direct and indirect losses. This will allow one to determine average uninsured costs per accident case. The estimate, even with a low figure, will change one's mind about accidents and injuries and how they take away from his/her profits.
