ABSTRACT

People are not born knowing everything — they must be trained for each new job. Oftentimes, it is taken for granted that the new employee has received prior job and safety training from a previous employer. The employer has a responsibility to instruct all employees in the hazards of the work. The worker learns by watching and working with an older employee; one who has a good track record of producing a quality product in a timely and safe manner. On-the-job training can be very beneficial because the supervisor can observe the training and offer suggestions. The supervisor can also see if the new worker brings any bad habits or a poor attitude to our company. It is the supervisors' responsibility to be knowledgeable about safety and to develop in their workers a proper attitude toward safety. Safety is a state of mind and if we do not keep it active, the employees will lose sight of it.
