ABSTRACT
The concept of adaptive control will play an important role, and adaptive controllers of the future will have to be provided with special capabilities, including the ability to improve performance. Modern control systems are becoming more and more sophisticated and demand certain exacting capabilities, and complicated decision-making abilities in the presence of uncertainties and changing environment. The very word adaptive is indicative of human capabilities and so one can say that adaptive control has a close kinship with intelligence. Extensive research is going on in the field of industrial automation, robotics, man-machine systems, anticipatory systems, learning theory, pattern recognition, and fuzzy logic controllers. A significant research effort is underway to exploit this technology and extend it to new applications. This will be a key technology in the next decade for the development of adaptive control systems.
