ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a general-purpose adaptive controller which is commercially available and presents some applications in power systems. It discusses the electric generator control and considers electric drives. The chapter describes some aspects of control in airborne vehicles, including missiles. It also considers some control problems in the pulp and paper industry, cement industry, heating and air-conditioning systems, and steel plants. The chapter also discusses the adaptive control of industrial robots and satellite attitude control. It explains the control of power plants and also deals with some valuable medical applications. Multivariable model reference adaptive control of thermal and nuclear power plants brings about striking improvements in performance. Adaptive control is an appropriate technique to control such solar plants in the presence of disturbances in the input due to solar radiation and external temperature. Magnetic suspension is one of the new ideas being actively explored for application in transportation systems.
