ABSTRACT

Theorem is a typical existence result in that it provides little or no help in pinpointing the location of the guaranteed maximum and minimum values. As the reader knows, additional information concerning extrema can be obtained with the aid of derivatives. This chapter examines this and other problems in which the derivative can play a significant role. It introduces the notion of accumulation point, and looks at the limit concept from a slightly different viewpoint. The chapter reviews elementary calculus with a brief consideration of a biological problem involving the cultivation of microorganisms. The presentation is based on Meyer. In microbiology, it is frequently of interest to cultivate and harvest various organisms for food, experimental investigations and medicinal purposes.
