ABSTRACT
Squeeze bottles with flip-top caps deliver puffs of odorized air to the nose. A graded series of odor concentrations enables the person’s olfactory threshold to be accurately measured in a few minutes. Clinics specializing otolaryngology, endocrinology, allergy, neurology, radiation therapy, or occupational medicine most often need quantitative olfactory testing, using the closely spaced odor intensities of Kit No. 11. Tell the subject that a selection will be made between a pair of bottles; one bottle having an odor and the other a blank. In absolute terms, nothing can be defined as odor-free; the blank bottle has been processed to be as odor-free as possible. PM-Carbinol is phenylethyl-methyl-ethiyl-carbinol diluted in White Oil USP, which is adsorbed by an inert matrix. It has a pleasant flowery odor. The decismel scale of odor levels is closely modeled on the decibel scale of sound levels.
