A Partial Ordering

Suppose P and Q are projections in a von Neumann algebra A. If there exists a projection Q ₁ in A such that P ~ Q ₁ ≤ Q, we write P ⪯ Q or Q ⪰ P. When P ⪯ Q but P ≁ Q, we write P ≺ Q.
