ABSTRACT
In this lecture we introduce the notion of the spectrum of an element in a Banach alagebra and study the elementary properties of the spectrum. We can think of the spectrum as a generalization of the range of a function in the case of a commutative Banach algebra. In the general case the spectrum can be thought of as a generalization of the notion of eigenvalues.
