ABSTRACT

Prevent pollution at the source to eliminate or minimize adverse health effects while protecting, preserving, restoring, and enhancing the quality of the environment. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 identifies an environmental management hierarchy in which pollution “should be prevented or reduced whenever feasible; pollution that cannot be prevented should be recycled in an environmentally safe manner whenever feasible. To be effective, a pollution prevention program should be in the minds of all employees. The plan for the program should originate with the employees through an employee committee where everyone participates in suggesting activities where savings in resources and labor can occur. Minimization incentives should be implemented to heighten the awareness of all staff through training and acquisition activities. Personnel training is vital to the success of any program. Implement a personnel training program. Some of the guiding principles are: protect the environment; conserve natural resources; reduce waste; prevent pollution; and comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
