ABSTRACT

There is a standard symbol for waste, equipment, or storage sites to indicate the presence of biologically hazardous materials. The symbol should be fluorescent orange or orange-red, include the word "BIOHAZARD", and be posted or firmly attached as a warning at storage places or to containers of contaminated objects. Tuberculosis (TB) was widespread in earlier times. TB was considered to be under control with the advent of effective antibiotics. The health threat posed by the rise of new TB cases is particularly serious for health care professionals. The Centers for Disease Control is working with Occupational Safety and Health Administration and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to create national measures to protect health care workers. Protective clothing is necessary for workers likely to be exposed to blood or other potentially harmful body fluids. It is important that employees be well informed about the nature of the hazards involved, as provided for in the right-to-know legislation.
