ABSTRACT

Skin problems are the most prevalent job-related diseases. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health believes skin problems are highly underreported. More than 90% of dermatosis cases are caused by contact dermatitis, direct contact at a localized site with a chemical agent. Types of agents and the damage they cause to the skin fall into several categories, with overlap occurring between these classes. Any reactive chemical presents a threat, most eye accidents involve acids, alkalis, solvents, and detergents. Organic solvents are generally chemically nonreactive and largely nonpolar chemicals. They damage the surface cells of the eye on contact, and, although this process is painful, it is much less threatening than acid or alkali exposure. Airborne particulates, dusts, can be eye irritants. Mining, woodworking, and steel making or metal forming facilities are places where such dust may be a problem. Lasers present a serious eye hazard. The danger arises from the intensity of the source.
