ABSTRACT

Mathematics is primarily sequential-concept builds upon concept. Those who experience difficulties with mathematics are generally facing two related problems: Difficulties with various types of mathematics calculations, and, as a result and a distaste for math or anything closely related to it. The solution to the "no linking" problem is to be sure that any new material makes sense and connects with what you already know. The solution to the "use it or lose it" syndrome is to use mathematics calculations whenever possible. Rather than using basic mathematics and applied calculations only when studying for or taking certification exams—incorporate as many calculations as possible in day-to-day operations. Theoretical mathematics includes math concepts such as fractions, decimals, percents, areas, volumes. These are the "tools" of mathematics. Applied mathematics is just what its name implies—basic math concepts applied in solving practical problems. The water and wastewater field is only one of many fields that utilize applied mathematics.
