ABSTRACT
Classification of quadratic forms over fields has been the leading theme of quadratic form theory. In this chapter we change the point of view and we try to compare the behavior of quadratic forms over various fields without necessarily solving the classification problem for quadratic forms. This leads immediately to comparing Witt rings of the fields in question and points out the central role played by Witt rings in quadratic form theory.
