ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the various activities and associated aspects in the successive phases of a construction. It summarizes the design process with the general design, construction and management aspects. In a maintenance-intensive design, the planning of major maintenance must take into account the procedure which may be necessary before repairs and the time required for such repair measures. A maintenance philosophy is central to management, where necessary in the form of a maintenance plan showing the use of staff, materials and equipment. The maintenance plan may distinguish between the ground structure or soil mass on one side and the added construction parts such as road construction and foundation, and surface protection on the other side. In addition to management, other factors with an influence on the design are technical constructional, environmental and constructional aspects as well as the costs. In the design of earth structures, the bodies which will in practice carry out the management also play a role.
