ABSTRACT

The responsibilities of the chemical hygiene officer must be described in the chemical hygiene plan. The chemical hygiene plan should be made readily available to employees, their designated representatives and to the Assistant Secretary of Labor upon request. The employer should review and evaluate the effectiveness of the chemical hygiene plan at least annually and have it updated as necessary. The employer must designate an individual qualified by training or experience as the chemical hygiene officer of a laboratory or a group of laboratories to be responsible for the development and implementation of the chemical hygiene plan. If appropriate, a chemical hygiene committee must be established. A laboratory is to have an appropriate general ventilation system with air intakes and exhausts located far enough apart to avoid recirculation of contaminated air. This ventilation system is to provide a source of air for breathing and for input to local ventilation devices.
