ABSTRACT

All laboratory workers must be protected from potential chemical and physical hazards by personal protective apparel and equipment. Every worker must be fully informed of the shielding capabilities as well as the limitations of their personal protective apparel and equipment and be trained in their proper use. A comprehensive personnel protection program shall contain the following components: hazard assessment, medical evaluation, equipment selection and use, employee training, and equipment inspection, maintenance, and storage. Appropriate personal protective apparel is advisable for most laboratory work and may be required for some. Personal protective apparel can be either washable or disposable. If the possibility of chemical contamination exists, personal clothing that will be worn home should be covered by protective apparel. Safety spectacles used in the laboratory must comply with the Standard for Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection established by the American National Standards Institute.
