ABSTRACT

Workplace hazards can best be controlled through engineering controls or by substituting less hazardous materials, equipment or processes. This chapter discusses the general types of protective equipment that might be required during a confined space entry. It explains how to establish an effective personal protective equipment program. Specifications for safety eye wear, head protection and foot protection have been established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Equipment that is designed to meet ANSI specifications can also be submitted to the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) for performance certification. Chemical protective clothing (CPC) includes gloves, boots, pants, jackets, splash hoods and fully encapsulated suits. Protective equipment is available in a variety of materials which offer varying degrees of resistance to different substances. Protective clothing and equipment is of no practical value unless it is properly selected, correctly worn and adequately maintained. These goals can be achieved by establishing a personal protective management program.
