ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the cycle-by-cycle simulation of the converter circuit and the modeling of discrete circuit components such as transistors, inductors, transformers, and capacitors. It introduces the techniques of modeling the circuit components in power converters for cycle-by-cycle simulations. A very useful application of Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE) in the analysis and design of switch-mode power supplies is the cycle-by-cycle simulation of the switching action of converters. Such simulations can provide very useful data, either directly or indirectly, for analysis and design purposes. The SPICE model parameters of the transistor can often be obtained from transistor manufacturers or soft-ware vendors. The development of a full and accurate SPICE model for a semiconductor device for all applications can be difficult when information is insufficient. A problem often encountered in the cycle-by-cycle simulation is the possible long simulation time required for the switching operation to reach a steady state.
