ABSTRACT

This chapter aims explain the principles and proper techniques of warm-up, flexibility training, and cool down. Warm-up, cool-down and flexibility exercises are important parts of a well-rounded fitness program. Generally, flexibility is the ability of a joint to move freely through its full range of motion. Different activities require different levels of flexibility. The focus of the flexibility warm-up should be the muscle groups that will be used during the planned exercise session, but it is best to include all of the major muscle groups. To improve flexibility most efficiently, stretches should be performed three to four times per week. Stretching exercises can be combined with relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and progressive relaxation. Many people equate stretching with warm-up. The purpose of warm-up is to prepare the body for physical activity. Warm-up increases range of motion and puts the body in a state of readiness for vigorous activity, which can enhance athletic performance.
