ABSTRACT

Histograms pose some problems for students in our classes. Just looking at tables of data, "ranges" and "intervals" is overwhelming for some people who believe that they will never understand this tool, and reasons for not using it begin to appear very logical. The histogram is a visual representation of a lot of data. If a second histogram is developed with data taken at a different office, or perhaps on a different day, comparison of the two histograms might be useful to the team as they address improvements in the process. A histogram may look like a simple bar chart, but it contains more information. In fact, a histogram is a bar chart of a frequency distribution of a continuous variable. Data and a basic understanding of the steps to construct the histogram are all that the team needs. The histogram is not lopsided.
