ABSTRACT

While the first tool, benchmarking, is used infrequently, brainstorming is probably used the most often because it is so much fun. Brainstorming is a way of generating a number of possible solutions to a problem. It stresses the use of "open-minded" or "free thinking" without critique of any idea expressed. The goal of brainstorming is to come up with as many ideas as possible without regard to "quality,” with as many team members as possible contributing their thoughts. Brainstorming does ensure that people do begin their problem solving with an open mind and not focus in on the "obvious" or "usual" answers to a problem. A facilitator would also be helpful in brainstorming, especially if the team elects to use the "structured" method. The leader or facilitator controls and directs the group more in the structured brainstorming session and asks each member, in turn, to suggest an idea or "pass" until the next round.
