ABSTRACT

Most of the old buildings in Europe are made with masonry walls and wooden floors. Such 11oors are normally designed to support relatively limited live loads and frequently they present an excessive deformability, so that in most cases they need to be strengthened and stiffened in order to satisfy the actual needs. Moreover in seismic areas it is also the necessity to provide to floors a great stiffness in their plane so to restrain the walls perpendicular to the seismic action and to be able to transfer the horizontal forces to shear walls (walls parallel to the seismic action).
