ABSTRACT

Combustion was first discovered by the caveman. The smoke generated by this early combustion technology was a result of incomplete oxidation generating submicron particulate. Thermal oxidation systems owe their existence to environmental regulations. The regulations that have spurred the proliferation of thermal oxidizers are the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. The Clean Air Act (CAA) was originally passed by the US Congress in 1955. The Clean Air Act is a federal law, but each individual state is responsible for implementing its provisions. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) translates the law enacted by Congress into specific procedures and emission limits that must be followed by every entity in the US TheNew Source Performance Standards program regulates emissions from new or modified stationary sources of air pollutant emissions. These technology-based standards apply regardless of the attainment status of the area where the source is located.
